I guess it’s always hard to get started with the first page of a new book. It can also be tough to start a new page in life itself. Writing the very first blog entry for a brand new website project is of course no exception. The time and commitment you have to put into making such a big project possible can really make you anxious about nailing your first post…
A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
So let’s just do the first step by writing a few sentences about myself. I am a 24 year old adventurer who happens to have a passion for photography. You could almost say that it was not my own plan to grab my camera and start traveling the world, but fate or some kind of destiny. But then again, I do not believe in such things. I believe that we all have to go out there and do whatever we can to accomplish our wishes and fulfill our dreams.
Now, let me start off a bit earlier. When I graduated from high school in 2008 I was in a place where I thought it might be interesting to see a bit of the world before coming home and settling down to a conventional life. When I say conventional, I don’t mean that in a bad way. It might be the right thing for most people, but after having been abroad for a while it never appeared to be “the right thing” for me. Not yet anyway…
So I went on a journey to Australia which led to a quick detour through South East Asia on my way back home. All in all traveling for 16 consecutive months, I saw a lot of breathtaking scenery and met many awesome people. It was natural to start taking pictures while traveling. But I didn’t think about being able to earn money from that amusement back then.
When I returned to Germany, I became a Media Designer, learning in an advertising agency for 2,5 years. It was in that time when I started to get into photography more and more. I also started quite soon to earn some money from it, mainly photographing sportscars for a local classic cars specialist in my area.
Even though everything seemed to work out pretty well for me, there was always something dragging me far away from home. Working in an office all day, I would feel caged sometimes. Getting into new adventures and being able to capture and share those moments of true beauty, was the only thing I could think about.
While I continued to work as a media designer and also as a freelance photographer, I started to make plans which soon became reality. You can see the first results here on the site. I took most of those first images in Germany, adding some shots from holidays around Europe from time to time.
What to expect from this website
In a few weeks I will start my journey in Canada, flying from Frankfurt to Vancouver on the 30th of June. I will stay there for quite a while, traveling and working my way through the country with a Working Holiday Visa. You can be there with me right from the start!
Obviously you are going to see plenty of photographs from all over the world in time. I will continue to get out there and try to come home with the best shots possible to share with you online. But while doing this, I offer you the chance to join me on my adventures.
I will write a full report about my travels, the places I have been, the people I meet and unexpected things that will happen on the way. By reading my blog, you will get a lot of background information about the pictures I take and the places I photograph. There will be behind the scenes photos and information about how to get to the places you can see in my portfolio. Also I will explain a bit, how I was able to master different kinds of situations as a photographer/traveler and give tips and advice every now and then.
Last but not least this will be sort of a live journal about my experiences in trying to become a successful travel photographer. I know that there are many people out there dreaming about a job like that. But it can be quite a big step to jump over your own shadow and really do it!
I would be honored to have you by my side, as a regular reader on my blog. I also encourage everyone to get involved. If you like what you are seeing and reading, please let me know. Feel free to comment on my posts and share them if you want to. I will always try to answer any questions or suggestions.
